Everybody wants to know what is waacking while I'mhere to tell you. Waacking start in the 70s in Los Angeles in the Gay clubsscenes. Now to understand the dance in this attention, you have to understandthe social environment in the 70s.
It was not OK to be gay. Many women of this erahave to sometimes limit or hide who they were in society, but when they went tothe club, that's where they let lose, that's where they felt their freedom andthat's where they can be themselves.
Poor gay kids from the the ghettos of Los Angelescreated punking as an expression from oppression. Emotionally andpsychologically fighting the marginalization of society. They used dance as aform of story telling to express creativity.
The main DJ of the gay clubGINOS was DJMICHEAL-ANGELO who coined the name PUNK or PUNKING an an inside joke among thegay dancers.
PUNK was derogatory term for gay men. So theoriginal punk dancers at the times, turn it a negative into a positive and punkthe music.
Punking is the action and waacking is the reaction.Chicken before the egg. That kind of thing. Punking was acting. When you punkyou become the movie. Your character does the story telling. So make perfectsense why the golden era of Hollywood was a major influence on the originalpunk. Silence films, musicals, features, Monroe, at stairs: Garbal, Charlie Chaplin. Looney tunes cartoons: Bugs Bunny. Bruce lee'sfilms. And even lightsabers from Star Wars. All of these things influence the movement oforiginal punks.
And of course you have the Batman and Robin TV series in the 60s.Which is where you saw the anonymous appears from the fight scenes. For thepals, punch, bam, crash, whack. Batman & Robin is where you get the namefor the movement Whack. If you look it up whack in the dictionary, means tostrike with force. But whack was a verb, whack was a action. It wasn't the nameof the entire style that the punk were doing. It was just one movement.
When the straight dance community began to fell inlove with the dance and culture. They did not want to associate with thehomosexual term of punk or punking. So they began call the dance with anotherterm. They call it WAACKIN. They call it the CAGNEY, after Hollywood dancer JimCagney. Or they call the dance SHABBA-DOO, after the first straight malewaacker to learn the dance from the original punk. He was a lockers, so hebrought a locking perspective to punking and waacking: NO, this is not the gay locking.
他们说自己Waackin’,或者说自己跳Cagney(取名于好莱坞著名舞者Jim Cagney),或者说自己跳的是SHABBA-DOO。
Waacking with the aa is used by Shabba-doo todissociate the word from its original spelling H that had a negativeconnotation. Like the sexual or to whack somebody to kill them.
As retune by Tyrone Proctor. It was Jeffery Danielthat added a G at the end of the name. Given it Waacking. The spelling that isrecognized by the dance community today.
How Waacking spread from Los Angeles to New YorkCity and the world? Original punks Arthur Tinker and Andrew were dancers onsoul train which was a national syndicated TV show, the reason why dancers allover the country were exposed to punking and waacking.
Soul train dancer Tyrone Proctor moved to New YorkCity and joined the group called breed of motion with legendary waacker voguerArchie Burnett and legendary voguer Willie Ninja. Members of the group had ahuge impact on the Waacking Scene in NYC as well as Japan. The influence ofBreed of motion was the main reason why Waacking and vogue began to resembleeach other.
The AIDS of the 80s devastated the punkingcommunity. All original punks passed away from AIDS or murdered, leaving ViktorManoel as the only living original punk. During the 80s and 90s, punking fadedfrom the public eyes, leaving traces of Waacking in the NYC and L.A. Clubscene. Peppered with miner guess appearances in films and TV.
Professional dances Brian Footwork Green recognizedthe lack of information and community regarding Waacking. He recognized theneeds for original Waacking elders to start teaching in NYC. When they turneddown his suggestion, brain decide to teach Waacking to provoke the elders tostep up and teach again. Brain was the catalyst for the resurgence of entireculture.
Brain Green began teaching at Broadway dance centerin 2003, exposing the movement Waacking to myself, and many other dancers of mygeneration.
We are the generation that have turned Waacking towhat you see today.
Also you have to remember that waacking has nogender. If you are women and you feel masculine, go with it. If you are man andyou feel feminine, go with it. If you feel like a unicorn, even matter, doesn'tmatter. It's what you feel in the moment that you bring into the dance. In thatmoment, you have to be honest to who you are and what you want to deliver andstory you want to tell. That's also a big part of Waacking. Just be free andlet go.
This dance is about being individual, about selfexpression, it's about freedom, it's about release, it's about telling a story,it's about a whole lot of drama. So that being said. That is Waacking.
